Where things stand today
Resizing and format conversion both run today, entirely in your browser using the Canvas API — including a combined mode that does both in a single pass. A browser-based background-removal tool was previously built and removed after its output quality didn't meet the bar for shipping; it may return later as a commercially sustainable, high-quality implementation, but isn't planned for the current phase.
